Zero Waste Adviser

We are currently seeking fixed-term or contract Zero Waste Advisers to help households and organisations to reduce their waste and lead the charge on Sustain & Enable's Community Zero Waste initiatives and projects.

Some experience with government/ community and/ or waste projects or services would be beneficial as we will be relying on the successful candidate's expertise, credibility, and reputation to attract funding and support for our waste initiatives. Additional training and on-the-job support will be provided including external training through the Zero Waste Network and WasteMINZ.

Ability to interact with people in an appropriate, culturally sensitive, caring, and considerate way (including Māori and Pasifika, immigrants from many different ethnic communities, people of all ages and abilities, business people) is a must.

Foreign language and cultural skills could be very helpful.

Knowledge/ skill in climate change/ low carbon initiatives/ projects would also be beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide support and advice for households and businesses to reduce their waste
• Become a zero waste subject matter expert
• Help us set up a Community Recycling Centre/ Resource Recovery Facility and smaller waste minimisation projects and initiatives
• Technical Zero Waste advice to help our Funding team write successful funding applications and proposals
• Support to management to improve our internal purchasing and procurement decisions and practices
• Stay on top of relevant waste and wider sector news and information and communicate important updates and information to the team
• Attend Zero Waste events and training and be the main point of liaison with waste advocacy groups such as Zero Waste Network and WasteMINZ
• Cross train other team members and support them on their waste journey - be a waste champion!
• Report writing

We need someone who:

• Has knowledge/ skill/ experience of waste minimisation practices and the waste sector.
• Can work collaboratively inside and outside our organisation to produce and document many and varied benefits for our environment, climate, and communities.
• Is honest and asks for help and support. Good communicator. Has empathy.
• Is able to engage respectfully with people of all ages and (dis)abilities.
• Has written and spoken foreign language skills – particularly for languages spoken by migrant or ethnic communities where some individuals can find it difficult to access services or understand written or spoken English.

We receive additional funding from MSD for Projects in the Community Flexiwage for eligible candidate placements, so we welcome applications from people who are on a main benefit (Job Seeker, Disability, Solo Parent...).

Job Details

• 5-30 hours per week
• Fixed-term or contract role, possibility to move to full-time over 12 months based on business growth and needs.

• Remote work, on-site, office-based, and various other locations of work as required
